What still works on an exposed frontage
Begin with species that evolved on this shore. Northern bayberry (Morella pensylvanica) fixes nitrogen and holds sand. Beach plum (Prunus maritima) flowers after the worst gales and fruits without irrigation. Lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) and sheep laurel (Kalmia angustifolia) knit into a low mat. Wild raisin (Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides) and red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) fill the middle band.
Plant small and plant dense. Bare-root or one-gallon stock at 45 to 60 cm spacing establishes faster than a large balled specimen, because a big root ball struggles to rehydrate in constant wind. Mulch with local leaf litter, skip fertiliser, and water only through the first growing season.

Compromises worth making

Compromises that are not worth it
Liming a bed to lift pH from 5.0 toward 6.5 is wasted work on acidic till. Rain and fog push it back within a season or two, and the plants that follow lime are not the ones that survive salt. Fertiliser is worse, because it pushes soft growth that the next gale shreds.

When the workaround stops paying
Two numbers end the argument. If less than 15 cm of rootable soil sits over bedrock, or if your frontage takes direct spray inside 30 m on a fully open shore, in-ground planting stops being worth the attempt. Containers behind a wall, or leaving the front to what already grows there, becomes the better use of effort.
