How to Design a Rain Garden for Clay Soil in Ohio

- Roughen the clay subgrade with a digging fork so water and roots can move into it.
- Mix 2 to 3 inches of compost into the top 8 inches of backfill, and skip sand.
- Shape a low berm downhill, then cut a stone-lined notch through its top.
- Plant in blocks of three to five of the same species, which reads better and simplifies care.
- Mulch 2 inches deep with shredded hardwood, then water everything in.
