Reading the slope before you plant

Slope stabilization with native plants: geometry and depth

  1. Stake a contour line every four to six feet up the slope.
  2. Plant plugs or bare roots in staggered rows along those lines.
  3. Set plugs slightly deeper than nursery depth to protect the crown.
  4. Mulch with coarse wood chips or hydromulch, never fine sawdust.
  5. Water deeply twice a week for the first season, then taper.
