Start with microclimate, not the regional map

A single lot holds several growing conditions. The south-facing wall bakes, the north side stays cool and damp, the driveway edge collects reflected heat, and the low corner holds water for two days after a storm. A plant that fails in one of those may thrive twenty feet away.

Map them before choosing anything:

  • reflected heat from paving, walls and vehicles;
  • cold air that pools at the bottom of a slope;
  • wind funnels between buildings;
  • roof runoff concentration points;
  • winter shade from structures, which is longer than summer shade.

Rainfall timing beats rainfall totals

Two places with the same annual precipitation can need entirely different plants. A Pacific Northwest yard gets its water in winter and goes dry in July. A Southeast yard gets summer thunderstorms. A Southwest yard may get most of its moisture in a short monsoon.

Match plants to when water arrives, not to a yearly number. Summer-dormant species look dead in August in a Mediterranean climate and are perfectly healthy. Watering them through that dormancy is one of the few ways to reliably kill a well-adapted native plant. By year two the safe rule is a trowel at root depth rather than a calendar.

Ranges are moving

Plant and animal distributions are not fixed. The Fish and Wildlife Service's account of wildlife, habitats and our changing climate records warmer winters altering some birds' migration patterns, with roseate spoonbills now regularly seen well north of their usual range and sooty terns nesting earlier. The same report expects rising seas to flood as much as 30 percent of habitat on coastal southeastern refuges.

For a yard, the practical response is modest but real: favor species with a wide tolerance range, avoid planting at the extreme cold edge of a species' range, and do not assume the list your neighbor used in 1995 still fits.

Plan for drought as a condition, not an event

Drought is now a planning assumption in much of the country. The Bureau of Land Management describes its drought management approach as adaptive, drawing on long experience with periodic drought while preparing for prolonged and extreme drought that affects the quality and quantity of terrestrial and aquatic resources.

The homeowner version of adaptive management:

Wildfire and wind change the rules again

Where wildfire is a risk, plant placement and maintenance matter more than species lists, and fire history changes which regional species belong near a structure at all. Follow your state and local defensible-space requirements, keep dead material cleared, and break up continuous fuel near structures. Where wind is constant, expect more water loss and more physical damage, and use lower, tougher plants on the exposed side.

Fold all of this into the project plan and into your project timeline, since climate mostly changes when you work, not just what you plant.
